My 5 favourite places: Ice cream edition

Vancouver is filled to the brim with ice cream.

Whether you’re a soft serve fanatic or you like to stay true to the classic ice cream in a cone, the choices in this city are endless. This fact is pure joy for someone like me who is in love with ice cream.

Ice cream has always been a treat for me, and Vancouver’s ice cream scene has taken it to incredible heights. There are a lot of innovative things happening with ice cream, from tasty ice cream sandwiches, to unique flavour combinations, to creating sweet treats using the power of science!

As with my beer list, this list is by no means exhaustive, and there are more places springing up than I have time to try!

So, here are my favourite places for ice cream in Vancouver:

5. Soft Peaks

Think IKEA soft serve, but chic and boutique. That is what you can expect when you go to Soft Peaks (25 Alexander Street) to have their soft serve sundaes. With plenty of combinations and toppings to go around, there is something for everyone. From the classic honeycomb for the purists, to the Green Mountain (matcha powder and red bean) for the Asian dessert enthusiasts and the Mudslide for the chocoholics, get ready to blown away. They also have expanded their offerings to milkshakes and popsicles.

4. 720 Sweets

These lovely folks have created something that is out of this world and has built a sweet empire in Vancouver at the same time! 720 Sweets (3278 W Broadway) is known for their extravagant creations and their equally jaw-dropping presentation. With multiple locations, you can get your sweet fix anywhere, and spice up your Instagram feed while you’re at it!

3. Tre Galli Gelato Caffe

Though not technically not in Vancouver, Tre Galli (810 Quayside Drive #121) is a must-visit for me any time I’m by the Quay in New West! With a wide selection of ice cream and gelato, I always have a hard time deciding what to get. Having gone many times, it’s safe to say that I’ve tried most of their flavours, and I’ve never had a bad experience!

2. Buckets Ice Cream

One of the newcomers to the ice cream scene in Vancouver as of summer 2017! Specializing in liquid nitrogen ice cream, Buckets Ice Cream (3330 Main Street)  serves up the softest and most flavourful ice cream I’ve ever had! You can choose to either have your scientific creation in a cup or cute waffle bowl! Being relatively new, their flavour offering is unique but still rather small, so I’m looking forward to what they come up with next!

1. Earnest Ice Cream

My number one pick for ice cream? Earnest Ice Cream (1829 Quebec Street), hands down! The expanding small-batch, artisinal ice cream store has a convenient location right by Main Street-Science World Skytrain station, making it easy to access a whole wealth of delicious ice cream flavours! From London Fog to Spruce Bud, Earnest’s ice cream is perfection.

Special Mention

I also wanted to quickly acknowledge what would have been #1 on this list, but unfortunately this ice cream place has since closed down. UYU Ice Cream (used to be 433 Abbott Street, which has now turned into another ice cream place Cacao 70), was a rotating, two-flavour soft serve ice cream place. Black sesame, Thai iced tea and Vietnamese Coffee were some of the many flavours that UYU came up with. They also had milkshakes and cold chocolate iced drinks. Hopefully they’ll reopen in a brand new location one day!
